Jukkasjärvi, Sweden
Icehotel
Every winter since 1989, a hotel has been built from ice cut out of the Torne River. By spring it melts back into the water it came from.
Artists from around the world are invited to design individual art suites, so no two seasons look alike. Guests sleep at a few degrees below zero on beds laid with reindeer hides, inside thermal sleeping bags.
Jukkasjärvi lies about 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, close to Kiruna. A permanent building, Icehotel 365, keeps ice suites and an ice bar open all year, and warm rooms are available for guests who want one cold night rather than several.
